Preventative Dentistry

We want to stop problems before they start.

Dental health is more than just keeping your smile looking great. Mouth health is essential to your whole body well-being. Exams and cleaning are important to care for your teeth and gums and to address problems before they become serious.

We’ll help guide you with tools for proper brushing and flossing at home. These skills are equally as important as routine dentist visits.

  • A comprehensive dental exam is a major part of preventative dentistry, Also known as a complete dental exam, this type of examination is generally recommended for all new patients and might be repeated every three years to five years depending on your oral health.

    During exam:

    1. Detailed records of the overall oral health and medical history will be obtained. There are many conditions in the body that affect the condition of your teeth such as diabetes, thyroid issues, and more. Some medications have side effects on your oral health such as dry mouth. This information is usually gathered on your intake form and reviewed by your dentist during your appointment.

    2. Diagnostic tests like a dental X-ray will give information about the condition of the tooth and the surrounding bone that is invisible to the naked eye. Your dentist will determine which type of x-ray is best based on your needs which can include periapical (root of tooth), bite-wing (upper and lower crowns of teeth) , and panoramic x-rays (the entire mouth and jaw).

    3. Extraoral examination of your chewing muscles and jaw joint (TMJ) for soreness, clicking or grinding followed by Intraoral examination to check soft tissues and evaluate gums for any signs of abnormalities.

    4. Finally, we’ll check any restorations present in the mouth including any fillings or crowns to verify their current condition and ensure they are still providing the protection needed. We’ll examine all teeth and look for signs of decay which can be easily addressed during your visit or a follow-up appointment.

  • A dental hygienist can remove deposits of plaque, tartar, or dental calculus that brushing and flossing don’t fully eliminate or can't remove in the case of hardened calculus.

Your teeth and gums are also examined for signs of decay or disease. Early detection of decay or infections makes treatment much simpler than when problems are left unchecked.

Not only do regular visits help your smile sparkle, but they also set your mind at ease with the knowledge that you are doing the right thing for your oral health.

We encourage you to keep up with your dental exams and cleanings every six months or as prescribed.

  • Helping our youngest patients grow into healthy young adults is a highlight for our team. We’ll monitor for cavities, plaque control, proper growth and alignment of the jaw and the newly erupted teeth.

With an early preventative hygiene plan, we can help them avoid childhood tooth decay and set up your child’s oral health for long-term success.

Along with educating our young patients on proper oral care, some measures we can take to prevent cavities include fluoride applications and sealants.

  • In a dental sealant procedure, a clear resin substance is applied to the bite surfaces of your molars and then cured, creating a semi-permanent shield over the crevices where food particles tend to get stuck.

This sealant provides a powerful line of defence against tooth decay, helping prevent cavities down the road.

Restorative
Dentistry

We want to keep your mouth healthy and functional.

Restorative dentistry refers to dental procedures that restore the functionality of the mouth. This includes repairing damaged teeth or replacing ones that have fallen or been knocked out, which can affect the ability to bite, chew, or speak properly.

These procedures include restorations (fillings), crowns, and teeth replacement with bridges, implants, and partial or completed dentures.

  • Dental crowns, sometimes also called caps, are placed over a tooth that’s extremely damaged, and apparently beyond repair to restore shape and function. They can be made from various materials including Gold or porcelain.

Fitting a crown requires two visits. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown.

On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown and then fit and adjust the final crown.

Finally, we will cement the crown into place and you have a new beautiful looking tooth.

  • Dental fillings are used as part of a conservative treatment plan aimed at preserving the natural tooth.

A tooth filling is used when a tooth is weakened because of small cracks, chips, breaks, cavities or other reasons.

The filling is intended to not just restore strength but to protect the tooth from future damage or decay.

A dental filling can help your tooth last for many more years!

  • In order to save a badly decayed tooth to the point of damaging the nerve or pulp, root canal therapy may be necessary. This procedure is often done as an alternative to extraction.

Root canal therapy involves removing the infected pulp tissue from the canals, cleaning the canals, and sealing them with a safe biocompatible material. Then the tooth is restored for function and strength.

After root canal therapy the tooth often becomes brittle. To protect the tooth from fracture, it is recommended for the tooth to be restored with a crown or veneer.

  • A dental bridge restores one or more consecutive missing teeth.

A bridge is comprised of crowns for the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, and an artificial tooth to replace the missing one. The crowns are cemented into place, anchoring the bridge securely.

This type of restoration is not removable, so it provides better stability than a partial denture. The bridge completes your smile and keeps natural teeth from shifting out of position.

  • This is an effective way to replace missing teeth. It’s also an excellent alternative to dental bridges when teeth adjacent to the missing tooth aren’t strong enough to support the bridge.

Dental implants are installed directly into the jawbone with the added benefit of stimulating bone growth and eliminating the risk of the loss of bone density and mass due to the absence of natural tooth roots. Also giving them greater longevity than bridges or dentures.

Once the implant is in place, it looks, feels, and acts like a regular tooth that you can brush and floss like you normally would your other teeth.

  • Although our first priority is to preserve and restore natural teeth, sometimes there are cases where saving the natural tooth is just not possible. This is often due to a severe root infection or damage that extends beyond repair.

When no other option is possible tooth extraction will be recommended.

Extractions may also be recommended when:

    • Periodontal disease (gum disease)

    • Dental accidents/injuries

    • Lack of space (wisdom teeth)

Prior to proceeding with the removal of your tooth, we will discuss all the possible options for replacement.

During the procedure, we will take all necessary steps to ensure the procedure will be pain-free with minimal discomfort.

  • A dental emergency is any dental problem that requires immediate attention.

    Examples of dental emergencies include:

    • Severe toothache

    • Broken dentures

    • Badly cracked tooth

    • Knocked out tooth

    • Extruded (partially dislodged) tooth

    • Dental abscess (swelling of your face and jaw)

    • Lost or broken dental restoration

    • Severe soft tissue injury (like a busted lip or deep cut)

Do not hesitate to call our office if you are experiencing a dental emergency.

We are dedicated to providing thorough and immediate care so that you can get back on track.

  • Dentures are a cost-friendly way to replace any number of missing teeth in your mouth.

Dentures traditionally come in one of two types:

    • Full/Complete dentures are used when all your natural teeth are missing. Complete dentures are removable as they are held in place by suction.

    • Partial dentures replace one or more teeth in a gap. They are held in place by clasps that fit onto nearby natural teeth. You can take partial denture out yourself for cleaning at night.

Cosmetic
Dentistry

The art and science of improving your smile’s appearance.

This can include improving the size, shape, position, alignment, colour or overall appearance of one’s teeth.

Common cosmetic dental procedures include teeth whitening, and composite or ceramic veneers.

  • Each veneer is a custom-made porcelain shell designed to fit over your most visible teeth, concealing cosmetic flaws and providing a flattering smile aesthetic.

The shade of the veneer, along with its shape and size will be made to match your surrounding teeth so that it blends in perfectly. Custom-made veneers can be used for just one or more teeth.

    Veneers are provided for:

    • Chipped or broken teeth

    • Worn teeth

    • Teeth that are too small

    • Gaps between teeth

    • Minor misalignments

    • Severe stains and discolouration

  • This involves bleaching the surfaces of your teeth's natural enamel to remove any stains or discolouring.

Teeth whitening doesn’t work on implants, fillings, crowns, or veneers because they are not made of tooth structure and are unaffected by the whitening procedure.

For this reason, whitening is often recommended prior to completing restorative dentistry procedures in highly visible areas of the mouth (e.g., your front teeth).

You can get your teeth bleaching process with in-office products but if you’re on a tight budget, you may also buy mould and whitening gels from your dentist to do the bleaching at home.
